A Modern School Vasant Vihar Initiative

YLC carries forward the founding ideals of Modern School, "To build leaders".

Achievers chosen from schools across the country are taught the essentials of leadership by top entrepreneurs in varied industries.

Each year, these scholars learn to bring change in their communities, thus, taking up the mantle of leadership with a conscience.

The Young Leaders Conclave (YLC) is one of the most awaited events in the country, on the School Calendar.

Held annually at Modern School, Vasant Vihar (MSVV), this year was its 6th YLC edition. A hundred students chosen from the most prestigious schools across the country participated as Fellows of YLC, 2018.

The theme for YLC 2018 was Dreams & Aspirations. Over the course of five days between the 10th - 14th August 2018, the Leadership Initiative had a panel of eminent public figures, in theatre, music, film, sculpture, and art share personal stories of their struggles, learnings and success in their areas of expertise. Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash (Classical Musicians), Samar Jodha (Photographer & Installation Artist), Anasuya Vaidya (Theatre director & Documentary filmmaker) Padma Shri Smt. Madhavi Mudgal (Odissi dancer), Ms. Kanchan Chander (Artist), Joy Sengupta (Indian Film & Stage Actor), Pankaj Guru (Sculptor) and Pallav Chander (Painter & Theatre Personality) were some of the celebrated names that YLC received patronage from this year.

The Conclave was a dynamic space for thought-provoking discussions and workshops, as it is every year. Some of the earlier themes of the YLC have been, the ‘Cost of War’ and ‘Leadership with an Eye on Governance’, ‘Leadership with a Conscience.’ Also, included in the Conclave were field trips to National School of Drama and, Lalit Kala Academy where students received insights on myriad forms of Indian Art, and all that goes on behind the screens in a theatrical performance.

Tathagata Chowdhury, the facilitator of YLC 2018, performed the famous American playwright, Edward Albee’s, The Zoo Story along with Deborshi Barat. The one-act play was an intimate encounter between a lonely man on a park bench in New York City’s Central Park and disheartened man who intrudes on the former’s solitude. The play explored the themes of isolation, social disparity and dehumanization in a materialistic world, and held the audience captive with its intense and riveting dialogue.

On the penultimate evening, an impromptu Talent Show organically came together, an opportunity for all the participants to loosen up, and share their talents with their friends. On the last day, the Chief Guest, Padma Shri Smt. Prathiba Prahlad, acclaimed Bharatnatyam Dancer, shared her love for dance and anecdotes from her life with the students. Following which were outstanding performances by the School Orchestra, Choir and the Classical Dance Society. The curtains fell on YLC 2018 with an eclectic performance by MSVV Alumni Quartet who collaborated in recital and dance accompanied by piano and graphic presentations to create ‘Milaap’.

In 2017, the YLC theme chosen for the School was the Cost of War. It encompassed debates, workshops, seminars, and was woven into the art and music performances. Students of all ages at MSVV entangled over the one word, ‘war’ in all its dimensions – psychological, economic, environmental and social. The annual ceremony saw a grand finale of a choir and an orchestra perform to the cacophonous sounds of war before it fell into glorious sounds of peace.

Ms. Meenakshi Sahni, Modern School, Vasant Vihar, Principal initiated YLC – MSVV’s Flagship Event in 2013, to honour the enduring philosophy of MSVV’s founder, Lala Raghubir Singh. Raghubir Singh created Modern School to build leaders. YLC, too, was created to inspire a global community of future scholars and leaders from across the country to build a better future. The five-day program is open to student leaders who have already displayed exemplary leadership in their schools.
